The Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), sometimes known as the implantable contact lens or Visian ICL by STAAR® Surgical Company, offers another vision correction solution for patients with myopia. The ICL is a corrective lens that is inserted between the iris and the eye's natural crystalline lens during a short surgical procedure. This procedure is similar to intraocular lens implantation performed during cataract surgery, with the primary difference being that the ICL eye surgery does not require the removal of the eye's crystalline lens.

The ICL offers not only excellent visual acuity, but also reversibility. Unlike LASIK or PRK, the ICL does not permanently change the shape of the eye. The ICL is designed to be set in place permanently, but the ICL can be removed if complications arise, which are rare. The ICL is an outstanding choice for many of those near-sighted individuals who are not good candidates for LASIK or PRK, because their prescription is too high or their corneas are too thin.

After a comprehensive eye examination, the doctor will discuss various refractive surgery options including the implantation of a phakic IOL (like the ICL) or other laser refractive surgery procedures that is customized for each individual. Not a LASIK Candidate?

Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK, but don't worry. Other options to become less dependent on glasses include the implantable contact lens, PRK and clear lens extraction. Take the self-evaluation test to see about your LASIK candidacy before having a consultation with us.
